There has been a brass band based in Ratby for over one hundred years — during that time, the organisation has developed into a thriving community of brass band players and its supporters from the village and the surrounding area. Ratby provides a truly unique environment to learn and develop your skills with an extensive library of music, instruments and expert tuition led by our professional Musical Director, Michael Fowles and conductors Geoff Newman, Becky Moss and Julie Plant.
Many players who began their music education with the band, have subsequently gone on to pursue careers at music college and into the profession at orchestras and military bands throughout the UK. In 1991, Ratby Band were awarded the title of 'Band of the Year' by the British Bandsman, who ran a survey to find out which bands were doing the most for the movement in respect of the training of youngsters. Particularly pleasing were the judge's comments applauding 'the band's ongoing dedication to the cause of young musicians'.
